What does aymara word mean?

T

he word aymará comes from three words: “jaya mara aru”. In which: (1) “jaya” means ‘ancient’, ‘old’; (2) “mara”, ‘years’ and (3) “aru”, ‘language’. So “aymará” means ‘language of the old years’, ‘ancient language’.

The Aymara language is part of linguistic family Jaqui (which means in aymara ‘human being’). Other languages from this family are: Kawki and the Jaqaru (from aymara: "jaqui", 'human being’ and "aru", 'voice', 'language, 'speech', so then "jaqaru", means 'human being’s language') both talked in Peru. Jaqaru is spoken by a few thousand people in and around Tupe, Yauyos, Lima, Peru and by large numbers in the cities of Lima, Huancayo, Chincha, and Cañete. Kawki is spoken only by a very few people in and around Cachuy, Yauyos, Lima, Peru and is a dying language (Hardman).
