Chuquiyapu (La Paz, Bolivia)
huquiyapu word comes from aymara language “chuqui”, ‘gold' and “yapu”, ‘farm'. Then “Chuquiyapu” means ‘Farm of gold'. It was surely called in this way because the exploitation of gold nuggets of the many rivers and creeks that crosses over this city. Now is known as La Paz.
La Paz, was founded by the Spanish captain Alonzo de Mendoza (Zamora, Badajoz –Sorata, Bolivia 5, June, 1551) on Saturday October 20 1548 in the town of Laxa. (-‘llaha’)
Although the day of the foundation some of people designated to live in the city in as “neighbours” (landowners) they were not present “to be like they were in the city of Lima and in the seat of Potosí and in other remote parts”, they proceeded to choose to the first authorities being designated Ordinary Mayors Juan de Vargas and Gerónimo de Soria (absent); regidores: Alonzo de Zayas, Hernando de Vargas, Antonio de Ulloa (also absent), Rodrigo Mexia (absent), Diego Peralta(absent) and Garci Gutiérrez de Escobar (absent) and Procurator Juan de Ribas, (also absent).
At once Alonzo de Mendoza takes oath to Juan de Vargas, giving him the stick of the justice. Zayas and Hernando of Vargas also lent equal oath, after that which Mendoza presented the provision that named him bigger Justice and Corregidor. In observance sign, Juan de Vargas took the provision and it placed it on his head. Francisco de Barrionuevo, Martin de Olmos and Diego Aleman deposit their individuals, goods, and lands on behalf of Mendoza.
But after one day or two, the neighbours moved to the neighbouring valley of Chuquiabo that offered more benign conditions that the Andean town of Laxa, and there in provisional form also, in a meeting in the one that Mendoza was absent, they proceeded to place the fork and pillory, symbols of the justice. According to this second record the Justice and the Regidores said that:
"since the place of the city of Our Mrs. of La Paz it is not looked for and until the meantime that it is looked for where more suits this way for the natural ones as for the neighbours, it suits to make body of the town so that the real justice is executed, the this gentlemen Justice and Regidores that there was not another better part found it where to the present can reside until meantime that you looks for seat to build the this city and to execute the justice they put fork and pillory in this town of Chuquiabo…."
The city of La Paz continues looking for where to settle definitively. Today (October of 2005) La Paz is 457 years old. It is located to the west of Bolivia; it is administrative capital of the republic and of the department of the same name. It is located in the Western Andean mountain range, to 3.625 m. of altitude.
