What Is Core Strengthening? - The body's "core" refers to the muscles around the abdomen, pelvis, and back. This core is in the body's center of gravity. As a result, it plays a role in almost all activities. From sitting to standing, walking to running, the core muscles are at work stabilizing our body from the force of gravity.

Chiropractic rehabilitation involves the restoration and proper joint function of the spine or extremities, and the strengthening of supporting muscles and soft tissues. This will usually involve specific spinal adjustments, combined with a program of stretching, resistance training, and exercises to improve muscle tone.

Weak core muscles make one more susceptible to poor posture, back pain, and injuries during activity. For this reason it is important to have strong core muscles. Without some form of active care or rehabilitation, recovery from an injury or a long-standing spinal problem can take longer to achieve. When muscles, tendons, or ligaments of the spine are damaged through an accident, overexertion, repetitive motion, or simply weakened by inactivity, your oveall health can be affected.

Without the proper tone in the muscles, tendons, and ligaments of your body, you would collapse like a rag doll. Overlooking the importance of improved range of motion and muscle strengthening can result in a relapse, with your original health problem returning again and again.

Dr. Plummer's office also uses the benefits of massage along with our in office stretching and workout program to aid in your recovery. Some types of injures may require the use of specialized equipment to isolate and strengthen specific areas of the spine. In any case our office will work with you to develop a personalized core strengthening program that will not only benefit you, but will get you back on the fast track to an active lifestyle. Ideally your core strengthening exercises should be performed at least three times per week for maximum effectiveness.
