The name Hardenhuish comes from a Saxon village (near Chippenham), which was first mentioned in 854AD when Aethelwulf, King of the West Saxons and father of Alfred the Great, granted the Charter of Heregeardinge's Hivisce to Wilferth the thane. It must have existed for a period before that date for Heregeardinge to have established his Hivisce (it means family holding). It's only recently that Heregeardinge's Hivisce has been spelled Hardenhuish - which locals pronounce 'Harnish'.
