Bat In The Shadow
Pipistrelle founder Kimberley took up the guitar at 17, after getting some crazy ideas from listening to The Jimi Hendrix Experience and The Doors. Actually, her first inclination to start a band occurred at 15 after watching the movie The Doors, but a lack of having a clue lead that initial formation of school girls getting excited about making music (without owning any instruments!) to disperse until sixth form, when she felt the calling once again.
Kimberley began writing lyrics in her free periods and has been trying to form a band ever since, but has not found anyone brave enough to leave their bedrooms, yet.
In the autumn of 2002 she met two lads who attended her college and they jammed on metal stuff for six weeks before folding. Kimberley says "they got me doing three stringed power chords and generally got me to speed up, which at that time helped a lot as my rhythm playing was quite weak. It was going to end sooner or later as we had different ideas, and I was always going to slow down the more experienced, but it was a postive experience for me and I'm thankful for what I learned back then. I'm naturally lead oriented but thankfully my rhythm has caught up now!"
In the summer of 2004 she began having guitar lessons from Hooker guitarist Rob Chapman to get her skills up to speed, and she continues to grab the odd lesson whenever she is at her mum's in Wiltshire.
In the mean time, she is embarking on The Solitary Confinement Project, under the name of Pipistrelle. A pipistrelle is a breed of bat common in the U.K. Kimberley used to watch bats flying around her backgarden as a child during summer evenings and so took inspiration for her name, from that back in 2005.
