(Updated 10/29/2009)

THIS is a site dedicated to enabling your Yamaha PSR-9000, 9000 Pro, Tyros, or Tyros 2 or 3 to make MORE BEAUTIFUL music than you ever dreamed possible.

The above five "Arranger" keyboards are, so far, the very best Yamaha has ever made in terms of musical creativity and flexibility. Even the so-called "professional" keyboards can't even begin to match them in terms of quickly creating and recording a new and highly realistic-sounding Song Arrangement.

But some people are totally amazing. After paying a hefty price for one of these magnificent keyboards, they WILL DO NOTHING WHATSOEVER to enhance its sound quality!

Perhaps they don't know that the internet has available SEVERAL THOUSAND free Accompaniment Styles, as opposed to the 300 or so factory styles in their keyboard.

And perhaps they don't know that all those neat features (Reverb, Echo, Chorus, Harmony, Portamento, Sustain, Sound Creator, Compressor, EQ, Tremelo, Trill, etc. etc.) were inserted by Yamaha to improve the sound of their music.

And saddest of all, perhaps they don't know about Registrations.

(I've seen it happen dozens of times. You mention "Registrations" to them, and their eyes quickly glaze over -- the word sounds meaningless.)

So... the first thing we need to do is clarify what a "Registration" is!

(If you don't want it clarified, but just want to know "What the hell good is it?" CLICK HERE)

It's really simple when you think about it. When playing a musical keyboard, you need to use certain "settings" to get the sound you want. A REGISTRATION IS NOTHING MORE THAN A HANDY FILE CONTAINING THOSE SETTINGS, all in place and ready to use.

Thus, if you need a Guitar and a Clarinet both playing together, about 4 feet apart -- you set them up in your File that way.

And if you need a softly wailing Harmonica in the background, you put that in your File also, along with some Reverb.

And every time you need a Guitar, Clarinet, and Harmonica playing together -- you return to that file.

Simple as that.

Or it can be more complex. Maybe you want the Harmonica and Clarinet playing together, but with the Guitar making chords whenever you play "harder" on the keys.

Or maybe you want that guitar to "strum" notes repeatedly while the Harmonica and Clarinet play together.

Or maybe you want the Harmonica and Clarinet not only playing together, but also HARMONIZING (i.e., when the Harmonica is playing a "C," the Clarinet is playing an "F" in perfect harmony.)

The file can be as complex as you want it. You can fill it with any of hundreds of Effects, you can brighten or tone down the instruments by using EQ, you can create your own "User Voices" that behave and/or sound differently from the normal ones, you can even make the notes sound "different" or appear out of nowhere by playing a little harder or softer.

But somebody has to set all these things up first. And when you've got everything set up -- it's called a Registration.

Registrations don't always sound "terrific." In fact, if they're not done correctly, they can sound terrible!

The trick is in learning how to make them sound GOOD. It requires practice and experience. (You could actually think of it as an Art Form.)

SOME people confuse Styles with Registrations. Please try not to make this mistake -- there is a BIG difference here.

Simply stated, a "Style" is the accompaniment music playing in the Background AUTOMATICALLY. And a Style CAN be stored in a Registration.

But a Registration can store MUCH MORE than "just" a Style. While that Ballad or Country or Rock music is pouring forth in the background from the Style -- you'll need some instruments in the foreground to play the Melody -- that is, the Song Itself.

A Registration holds ALL OF THESE, and much more, ready for you at a moment's notice. And you can have hundreds of different Registrations, with a different style stored in each.

Anyway, I somehow got fascinated with making Registrations. Almost every kind you could imagine. And as I have mentioned elsewhere, I've been giving out these Registrations for nearly three years now.

Free. At no cost whatsoever. And of course, all they cost me is my time.

(Dave at work in his beautiful Studio with a View...
I learned very quickly not to lean forward while playing.)

IN THE BEGINNING
(or, "How It All Started")

Making Registrations is not that hard, once you get the hang of it. What can be hard is getting them to load into other people's keyboards. For a while, this little technicality kept me pretty busy, because for some reason the new Registrations refused to Download properly: they required folders with special names, wouldn't work without an OS upgrade, and required special settings and tons of patience -- but, with the help of others**, we finally found a way to make the job "simpler."

Sure, I didn't charge anything for the more than 380 Registrations, but maybe I should have. They were made for just the PSR-9000 and the 9000 Pro, but according to several who have tried, nearly two-thirds of the 380 even work in their new Tyros! * * *

Just What Are "Registrations," Anyway?

Most of you already know about Registrations. If you're not using them, at least you've seen them on your Yamaha (and other) keyboards. Do you like playing genuinely beautiful music? Perhaps you don't know it yet, but good REGISTRATIONS ARE YOUR VERY BEST TOOL when it comes to coaxing really sweet sounds out of your keyboard.

Why? Because a Registration is nothing more than a "frozen" setup in which Voices, Effects, Harmony, EQ, Compression, Touch Sensitivity, Panning, Reverb, Chorus, and many other features are WORKING TOGETHER to produce a more pleasing and effective sound... and a good Registration setup can be very beautiful to listen to. Unfortunately, most of us are not Programmers, and either don't want to or don't have the time to learn how to be one.

That's where I come in.

Having had several years of experience in programming both computers, keyboards, synthesizers, and sound modules, I got ahold of a PSR-9000 and decided to set up a few fancy programs (Registrations) and make the keyboard REALLY show off its potential.

Just good clean fun, I told myself. But somehow, I went completely bonkers and didn't stop until I had created more than 380 Registrations, each different, and also a few "tweaked" Styles. (A "tweaked" Style is one from the Styles area of the keyboard that is set up with several Variations of the basic Styles Voices... so that each variation has DIFFERENT Voices, Panning, Reverb, Velocity, EQ, or whatever else, in place of the originals.)

As it turned out, I was so enthralled by these beautiful sounds the 9000 had enabled me to create, that I felt it would be rather selfish to just keep them to myself. So... I decided to give them away.

I didn't know what I was getting into.

So You Didn't Receive Your Registrations?

Sure, it can happen. And of the more than 1200 persons who have so far requested that I send the Registrations, only about 8 percent wrote back afterward to let me know they'd been received. And... since email DOES often fail, I never knew (a) if the Registrations were never received, (b) if they were received but didn't download properly due to inexperience, poor software, not following directions, or some other reason; (c) if they were received but were used incorrectly,* or (d) if there are still people out there waiting for me to Send Their Registrations, who are too bashful to inquire WHY THEY NEVER ARRIVED.

(One gent in Tacoma, Washington wrote me THREE TIMES, asking if I would send the Registrations. I sent them EACH TIME. He never did write back, so I don't know if he's received them. For all I know, he may still be waiting.) And you wonder why I doubt the reliability of email?

Fortunately, most of the 8 percent who did write back were quite pleased, and a few even wrote Rave Reviews -- which was encouraging.

And so, it is to those who were kind enough to write back, that this page is dedicated. Its purpose? To let ALL PSR-9000 and 9000 Pro owners know that the Registrations are STILL AVAILABLE, and if somehow you were missed the first time around, I feel terrible about it but we can try again.

*(Registrations only work well if both the Accompaniment and the Registration "Freeze" buttons are turned ON; also, I only worked on the Voices... YOU need to select the Style you want. Please don't be one of those who expect me to do EVERYTHING. If I had attached a specific Style to each Registration, I would be hearing "WHY did you use that crummy style?" LOL.)

MAYBE IT'S YOUR EMAIL

(I just got this note in the mail. Here it is, word for word):

"Hi Dave,

I just received your e-mail with the attachments, but for some reason I am unable to open the attachments. My e-mail-Outlook Express will not recognize attachments. Is there any other way I may receive them?

Thanks for your help."

In cases like this, or in other cases where your email program DELETES attachments, I have another way of getting the Registrations to you, so don't despair -- just write me about the problem.

What Kind Of Music Can I Play?

Since we're on the subject of "personal tastes," let me clue you in about mine: most of my Registrations have set-ups that are geared toward Easy Listening, New Age, Country, Ballads, Blues, Light Rock, Swing, Big Band, Folk, Dixieland, Classical, and certain types of jazz. (Oh, sure, you can also use them with Marches, Reggae, Latin, Alternative, Soul, Gospel, Disco, etc. etc., but if you like playing Heavy Metal, Hip-Hop, Acid Rock, Progressive Rock, or anything using a Distortion Guitar, you probably won't enjoy many of these Registrations.

HOW THE REGISTRATIONS BEGAN

Vince Marek started it all off in the PSR-Styles Group on July 18, 2001 (message #4856, for those who need to check) with this rather eloquent post:

"A week or two ago Dave sent me over 100 of his registrations for which I am ever so thankful. This man has a great talent for taking a voice and then varying all the different parameters such as filters, equalizers, effects, etc and then appropriately mixing several voices together to get the most beautiful sounds. I was able to take his zip package and load it on my 9000 PRO on the first pass. Smooth as silk.

Being new to the instrument (and this group), Dave's registrations have helped me immensely. I have learned how to get in there and tweak voices on my own. His sharing was generous and greatly appreciated. For Dave and those like him who want to share their creations and contribute to the education of others like me, this group should so facilitate. One day I hope to do the same.

Heck, just appreciation for beautiful sounds is justification in itself for such a file."

Registrations For The Tyros?

***
According to more than three hundred keyboardists who have tried the Pipelinerr Registrations in their new Tyros, nearly two-thirds of the 380 work just fine.

The reason some do not is probably because some voices I created on the 9000 were "custom" voices (had faster decay, slower attack, repeating echoes, etc.) -- and these are apparently set up differently on the Tyros.

Help Operating the Tyros

Joe Waters tells us the Tyros is similar enough to the PSR-2000 that much of what works for one will work for the other. Joe says:

Not owning a 2000, you probably haven't spent much if any time looking at the PSR-2000 Tutorial site. But, now that you are expecting a TYROS, you can get a jump start by reviewing some of the material there. The TYROS works pretty much like the PSR-2000 (and the CVP pianos). The screen shots will look nicer, but they'll show the same functions.

If you review the lessons on the Music Finder, I did put a few Tyros screens in there so they could be compared with the equivalent PSR-2000 screens so readers could see how close they are.

I could put a lot more Tyros screens throughout that Tutorial, but have been waiting to get my new computer completely installed and set up before starting that. The lessons there on Registrations, modifying accompaniment styles, creating OTS, will all be applicable to the Tyros. The Tyros will have MORE options in various places, like having the three intro buttons on the keyboard instead of just one.

When you look at the file system it operates the same, but the Tyros has an additional area for files. The PSR-2000 only has PRESET, USER, and FLOPPY DISK. The Tyros can also have a HARD DRIVE. If you don't already have it, here is Joe's link:

http://psrtutorial.com/
(JOE'S EXCELLENT PSR-2000 & TYROS TUTORIAL)

[NOTE: Both Joe and I have tried every way we know, but still my Registrations WILL NOT work in the PSR-2000, 2100, or 3000. Please do not write and ask me about them if you own one of these keyboards.]

GIVING AWAY REGISTRATION SECRETS

(How Did Dave Make Them Things, Anyway?)

A number of keyboard players, both amateurs and professionals, have asked me to explain "more" about how I set up the Registrations to sound so good. As I find time, I'm going to try and answer that question. Right here.

[1] STEREO SEPARATION. Many were amazed at the way TWO voices were playing side-by-side, with a sterephonic separation of 1-2 feet or more. Of course for those of you familiar with the word PAN, it wasn't amazing at all. PAN, unless you're talking about the Greek God who is half goat, (from whom we get the name Pan Flute, which he is reputed to play), is a word that, to keyboardists, means "positioning" of the Stereo Voices. To PAN LEFT means one voice is set toward the left side, and to PAN RIGHT... well, I'm sure you get it.

With two voices set up to play together and be spatially "apart," the effect is nice enough. But can it sound better still?

[2] HARMONY. Oh, indeed it can. Many keyboards of today now have a built-in "Harmony" feature -- which allows two (or even three) voices to play together in perfect harmony. And as I've said before, Harmony doesn't simply mean the voices are playing together at once. It means they HARMONIZE!

Yes, the computers built into many keyboards now can instantly calculate WHICH NOTES WILL BEST HARMONIZE with any given note you are playing! So if you're playing, say, an "A" using the Violin on the left side, the keyboard's computer might cause the Flute on the right to respond with an "F." And this is Harmony -- a beautiful effect, normally quite difficult for many musicians, which is now done automatically for you with every note you play. "Harmony" and some discreet Panning, are largely responsible for the stunning beauty of most of the Pipelinerr Registrations.

[3] INDEPENDENT NOTES. Those with a Tyros won't notice this feature in my Registrations because the "conversion" didn't work on the Custom Voices I'd created -- but on the 9000's they will sometimes hold down a note and WHILE IT KEEPS PLAYING ON THE LEFT, the voice on the Right will be fading out, or perhaps warbling, or "whooshing," or "wahhing," or bending, or creating some other unusual effect. These effects are often made by creating a WHOLE NEW VOICE (that is, a "Custom" or User Voice) with entirely new characteristics. And whereas the original voice was set up to SUSTAIN when held down, this one may have a more rapid DECAY, causing it to gradually Fade Out. Or the new voice may have some Tremelo added, causing it to "repeat" over and over, like a mandolin. Or maybe it has some added Harmonics, with a delay so they won't "kick in" until a few seconds have passed. Or perhaps it has a slow Attack that builds in volume, so that as the key is held down, the voice on the Left sustains while the one on the Right gradually builds, getting stronger and louder. There are a hundred different possibilities, maybe more.

[4] TOUCH-SENSITIVE VOICES. Yes, I said "Voices," not keys. Oh, the keys can definitely be touch-sensitive, if you set them to be -- but you can also set EACH VOICE to have its own Touch Sensitivity.

Don't get me wrong -- you can't have one voice be VERY touch sensitive and another voice NOT have that same sensitivity (except in the case of Custom Voices). But you can have, say the R1 voice, be VERY sensitive, while the R3 voice doesn't SOUND AT ALL until you hit it hard. This is accomplished by a setting in the Harmony section called Touch Limit.

Thus, you can play a Piano, which shows up slightly left of center, and WHEN YOU PLAY HARDER, a "new" Piano shows up on the right of center, only the new one creates its own harmony notes that play along with the first! ALSO, you can have some of your voices NOT BE TOUCH-SENSITIVE at all (by pressing Function, then Controller, then going to p. 2, where you can set the R1, R2, and R3 volume levels as you want them.) And then you can top it all off with Aftertouch Sensitivity -- by pressing on the key after the note has sounded, a whole new voice shows up, for example a Strings section. Generally the only way to set up Aftertouch on a Tyros is in a User (or Custom) Voice, and it only works well with "some" voices, and they must be voices that Sustain.

[5] MULTI ASSIGN. Both 9000's and the Tyros have this feature, which can create some amazing effects. With Multi Assign you can set up a Registration with, say, a Steel Guitar on the left, a Slide Guitar on the right, and a "Funk" Guitar in the center -- which in itself isn't unusual, HOWEVER -- press a key and Voice 1 will sound, press a 2nd key and Voice 2 will sound, and press a 3rd key to make Voice 3 sound. (Oh, do you need to set the Touch Sensitivity and a few other things "just so," but if you do it right you'll get a wonderful assortment of guitars playing together that alternate and "slide into" each other as you play, and of course it's all in glorious Stereo.)

[6] MIXING CONSOLE. Okay, I'll be honest. Like nearly everyone else, I was a little afraid of this thing. Good grief, it had all this vast array of numbers and settings -- every time I went in there, I got lost -- and if you think anything in there made much sense to me, you'd be mistaken!

But I began to realize how important it was. This was the HEART of the instrument, if you wanted to edit or make changes to your sound. There was no getting around it.

One reason I got lost so often is that I wasn't aware of how PRESSING THE MIXING CONSOLE BUTTON MORE THAN ONCE would "change" things around -- so that while I thought I was accessing the R1, R2, and R3 voices -- I instead found myself in among the Styles' Voice Parameters!

And contrariwise, when I really WANTED to access the Styles Voices, I could never find them in the Mixing Console -- because I didn't know they couldn't be found UNLESS I PRESSED THAT MIXING CONSOLE BUTTON more than once!

DAVE'S BIGGEST SECRET

This won't sound like much for those who have learned to surf the web quickly and easily -- but for those who haven't, it will be a Revelation!

I once had a lady friend who surfed the web like this: after she entered a site, she thought the only way out was to BACK OUT the way she came in.

She was amazed when I explained to her that she didn't have to "back out," but instead could go anywhere she wanted by either clicking a link, or typing a new address in her browser's address box. (Of course there are other ways too.)

Some using the Tyros and even the 9000 have the same limits to their vision. Once they enter the Mixing Console and change a few settings in, say, VOLUME, they think they have to press "Exit" to get out and (for example) get a new Voice for R1 or R2. Well, of course, they "can" do this, but it's easier to just press the Voices Section you want and grab a voice -- and THEN you can use "Exit" to back into the area you were at, to make changes for that new voice.

What I am saying is, don't be afraid to JUMP ALL AROUND, from one area to another -- this is the quick and easy way to get things accomplished. When I'm working in the Mixing Console, I've often bounced from there over to Function, then into Utility -- made some changes there -- then went back and pressed Mixing Console (yes, I could've pressed "exit" to get there, but this is faster), then went to Filters and added some Brightness, then to Effects and put in some nice Reverb or Echoes -- then to Voices, where I put a new voice in R3 -- then to the Mixing Console Button, which I now pressed 3 times to access Style Mixing -- and from there I added to the Drum Volume, and lowered the volume on the Bass, all the while the Style was playing. Then I jumped directly to Master EQ and brightened up a few voices that needed it, then -- (but I'm sure you get the picture.)

YAMAHA'S SECRET GLOSSARIES

(They Never Told You About These, Did They?)

So you've always wondered what Aftertouch meant. Or Polyphony. Or Portamento.

Or maybe you knew all those terms, but don't know how to control Attack Time, or LFO Amplitude, or maybe AC1 LFO Pitch Modulation Depth.

These neat little Glossaries will tell you EVERYTHING.

(Well, almost everything. I still can't find "compressor." LOL)

DAVE WHINES OBNOXIOUSLY

Reasons That Some Of You May Be
Dissatisfied With The Registrations

Oh, there are so many reasons! It's painful, so painful to talk about, I tell you.

Nevertheless I will force myself to talk about "a few".

(MUSICAL TASTES):
Yes, as mentioned earlier, my tastes in music do not run the same as everyone's. I created these to be used for Music That Has An Actual Melody, as well as certain types of jazz. (Music like this actually once existed!) This will make some of you who like Rap, Punk Rock, and screaming guitars, very unhappy.

(DISTORTION):
Sometimes I hear that the Registrations sound AWFUL! Distorted, screeching, moaning, etc. This really puzzled me until I later learned that ANY Registrations could be distorted by playing NON-PSR MIDI'S in the keyboard. These midi's, millions of which can be found on the Net, often change the Sys-Ex and other midi commands, causing one's music to literally "sound like hell warmed over." SOLUTION: reset the keyboard, usually by holding down the very last White Key on the Right Side while turning the keyboard "On." This clears away everything except that which has been specifically "Saved." (And from now on, use only "PSR" midis, unless you like to live dangerously.)

(FRAGILITY):
Next, these Registrations are FRAGILE! Yes, fragile. Once downloaded into your 9000, they will work just fine UNTIL SUDDENLY perhaps half of them begin to sound VERY WEIRD. This is probably because you neglected to BACK UP the Registrations to your 9000's Flash ROM (as I had suggested) so that when you turned off your 9000, or changed Registration Banks, EVERY CUSTOM VOICE that I sent you IMMEDIATELY VANISHED. And so did the quality of the many Registrations which required those Custom Voices in order to sound good. (As for the Tyros, many of those "free" ones will sound weird no matter what we do. Fortunately, many also sound just fine. And the "new" ones, though not free, sound even better.)

(SOME ARE MISSING?)

A few have complained that "some" of the Registrations, specifically Banks 57 through 62, are MISSING. True. The "Registrations" are missing because they were never intended to be there. (As I explain on my "9000 Help Station" page under "Tweaking Accompaniment Voices," Banks 57-62 have NO Registrations -- only my "tweaked" Styles. That is, in Bank 57, Registration #1 holds an "untweaked" Style. Then #2 has THE SAME STYLE, "tweaked" with different Pan positions, drums, voices, DSP, etc. to demonstrate how you, too, can make ONE STYLE sound almost like a whole other style. And #3 is another variation, and so is #4, #5, #6, #7, and #8. You'll find ANOTHER style in Bank 58, with Variations in all 8 there also. And it's the same with Bank 59 thru 62... different variations of the same style. None of these is "remarkable," because I didn't have time to really work at it. But it's enough so you can see what a little "tweaking" of your own can do.)

(HARSHNESS):
A very few have complained that the Registrations sometimes sound "harsh" or "aggressive." Yes, this is true, if you are in an acoustically "live" environment... with no drapery, sofas, carpets, etc. to absorb the sound. Read again my pages on "Tweaking" and you will learn how to correct this.

(SOME EMAIL WILL DELETE THE REGISTRATIONS):
A few of you may have email programs that Automatically Delete any attachments (supposedly to prevent viruses). Which means that when I send the Registrations to you -- you receive NOTHING! (I'm sure there are some out there who received a BLANK email from me saying "Here are your Registrations," who hate me to this day.) Since then we've found a way around this problem, but it still exists.

(THE SAME STYLES?)
Yes, it's true. In both the 9000 and the Tyros Registrations, I used the same styles over and over. WHAT! DAVE, ARE YOU CRAZY? Actually, I may be, but that is beside the point. The reasons I only used one or two styles are multifold: (1) The Registrations are intended to show off the Voices, NOT the Styles. IF a different style were attached to each Registration, people (who should know better) would lazily ignore the other 200 styles on board, and just use the SAME STYLE ALREADY "ATTACHED" to each registration.

Now is that dumb or what? And I don't even want to tell you how many would believe that THAT WAS THE ONLY STYLE they could use for that Registration. It's easy to grow lazy and stupid when you've got a keyboard that does almost everything for you. (2) I had my own reasons for using only a few styles -- the main one being, HOW COULD I POSSIBLY DETERMINE WHICH VOICES SHOULD GO WITH WHICH STYLES? To do so would not just be difficult, since ANY voice registration will play well with almost ANY style -- but it would also be implying, once again, that "THIS" WAS THE BEST VOICE FOR "THIS" STYLE. And that's simply nonsense.

Thus, only one or two styles were used. If you grow tired of those, pick one yourself. Both the Tyros and 9000's have at least 200 to choose from. *

* The All-New Tyros Registrations, which are far superior and will actually cost you money, have NO styles attached! Each Registration is connected to one of Ken Winter's Famous "Phantom" Styles -- which means that you can switch styles quickly and easily, and WITHOUT needing to go thru the bother of using the "Accompaniment Freeze" to do so.

Post Script

** Let's not forget these marvelous, terrific people who helped me out: George Allison, Vince Marek, Bill and Frances, John CN Yap, George in the U.K., Ronny Buermans, Simon Williams, Gail Cummings, Michael Bedesem, the very dedicated Ms. Shirley, and the amazing and inventive keyboard artist Ken Winter. And if I've left anyone out, please forgive me. Without their unswerving dedication, helpfulness, and a number of back-and-forth emails, I never could have gotten the Registrations to work in "other" 9000 and Tyros keyboards.
