Biography: 1989: Alfie Isaac is born into the huge Laine family. He is the fifth of what would be seven children with unusual names beginning with A, and only the second boy. He is a relatively quiet baby, except when he screams, he screams. Mama Laine convinces herself that this son will enter into a profession that allows him to be as loud as possible, as she drives the dirt roads around their station in rural South Australia with baby Alfie, the only thing that would get him to sleep, short of Dad's lullabies.

The baby banshee has grown up some and become interested in making noise in as many ways as possible. Banging on things with toys just isn't cutting it, and big brother August teaches him to play little ditties on the old family upright piano. What is this? Noise that sounds good? Alfie is hooked.

March 3rd, the morning of Alfie's seventh birthday -- and a kid-sized guitar with a big blue ribbon is waiting at the end of the bed for the messy-haired little boy to almost fall out of bed trying to get to it in his excitement. Daddy Laine is a bit of a muso, himself, and spends the entire morning teaching his fifth child to play C chord. After pancakes, of course.

Eleven year old Alfie spends all of his school holidays out in the hayshed, playing until his fingers bleed. He would just play in the house, but Mum banished him from his noisemaking years ago. Plus, the horses are pretty fond of the latest tune he's been composing. More importantly, big sister Aubrey says it sounds "pretty good, I guess". Success! Approval from the beloved sister he was attached to from the day he could walk.

Friends from the Laine family's annual town destination of Port Augusta have joined in his noisemaking, and they form a band. Only songs that Aubrey likes are submitted for the approval of the midnight society... er, band. Jam sessions are overseen by August, because big brother always knows best. Hey, you guys are getting pretty good. Maybe you should pick a name? Soundwave? What, like the Transformer? Dorks.

Making new friends but keeping the old -- connections are like silver, and record execs with an ear for talent are gold. Soundwave's first studio album Showbiz is released, Australia loves. Wow, seems like the U.K. loves, too. The fifteen-year-old country boy gets a culture shock after being thrust into the spotlight. "The ARIAs? Going on TV? Why do magazines want to talk to me?"

So many songs swimming around in Alfie's brain leads upstream to their sophomore release, Origin of Symmetry. It's so much easier to work on your noisemaking when your big brother is producing it. There's always someone to guide you, look after you, and blame when the chips are gone. Taking your sister on tour is an entirely different story, however -- there's always someone to buy your drinks, pick you up off the floor when you're too tired and tipsy to move, and blame when all the rum is gone.

Older, wiser, and taller. More creative, too, as this year's studio release Absolution hooked Alfie's first ARIA Award. Oh, the look on Mum's face when she put that pointy award up next to Aubrey's Olympic gold! He would never forget it. Such a mama's boy. The only thing equal to Mum's approval is Aubrey's, and she gave the two thumbs up. Well, at least until he ate the leftover chicken that she was saving. War is waged.

Who knows what the future may bring? Soundwave's all set to release their newest musical offering, and they're pleased at the hype following the singles released so far. What a joy to turn on the car radio on the way to the coast and hear your silly song you spent a week turning murderous at because you couldn't find that perfect melody! Muttering curses at your bandmates, cuddling your dog like a grumpy gills when nobody would listen to your input (because it was dumb and clearly fuelled by sleep deprivation, but whatever). Can't wait for tour.
