Thumbs Up To Hogey

Note on soap magazine publication dates and content of articles/interviews regarding multiple soap stars: Many of the monthly or every other month (and sometimes quarterly) magazines back in the 1980's would be on the newsstands a long time before the date on the actual magazine. We've noticed, for instance, that Daytime TV magazine did an interview with Drake in late 1986 about his upcoming wedding, which was scheduled for December 1986, yet the interview didn't appear until the July 1987 issue several months later. Therefore, it might be a bit confusing to read about his "upcoming" wedding in an interview dated July 1987 when you happen to know he was married in December 1986. We've tried to date the articles to match the date on the magazine, regardless of when the events talked about took place. Hopefully it will make sense as you go along!

We've also edited some of the articles/interviews to just include John's storyline, since this is a Drake/John website. We've left out comments and sections about other actors or storylines unless they're involved with John's storyline. This too should be very apparent and clear when we've done that so it makes sense and you don't have to skim through a long article to find the "John parts."

Heroes - Soap Matinee Idols

The heroes of daytime, the knights in shining - and not-so-shining - armor, that fill our TV screens each weekday afternoon, are our new matinee idols. Like the film heroes that etched their images into our consciousness in years gone by, today's soap heroes are larger-than-life fantasy figures. Whether they are romancing a beautiful woman, trading quips with a ruthless opponent, or on the run in pursuit of a new adventure, these soap swains are the stuff that dreams are made of! Soap Opera Update offers you in the following pages our look at the matinee idols of movies and what we feel are their counterparts in the world of soap. We know you won't be disappointed when you behold the likes of Drake Hogestyn, Cary Grant, Tristan Rogers, and Elvis Presley all together in our special tribute to the heroes of daytime!

Drake Hogestyn:

With his athletic good looks, self-confident swagger and strong, sensitive demeanor, DAYS Drake Hogestyn (Roman) is daytime's answer to Clark Gable. Like Gable, Hogestyn's personality and bravado are overwhelmingly attractive and sexy, more so than say, his command of the role or his philosophical approach to a scene. You can sense in Gable and Hogestyn, the personality as well as the person, the ability to enjoy the work and therefore make the viewer enjoy it.

What You May Not Know About:

Drake Hogestyn attended the University of South Florida in Tampa on a baseball scholarship. He studied microbiology and wanted to be a dentist. He later played professional ball with the New York Yankees in the minor leagues. He lives in Malibu with his wife, Victoria and their children.

Golden Moments For August
Roman And Marlena's Reunion On DAYS

Best Of The Best:

The biggest event on daytime during August had to be the reunion of DAYS' Roman (or the guy who thinks he's Roman, played by Drake Hogestyn) and his wife, Marlena (Deidre Hall), who had been presumed dead for more than four years. When Roman left the party for his engagement to Isabella (Staci Greason) and followed a mysterious set of footprints to the fog-enshrouded pier, fans knew what was coming. And they were not disappointed.

Actually, that's not quite true. East Coast DAYS' viewers were disappointed, not by the reunion itself but by the fact that they missed most of it. Since the Soviet Union doesn't have soaps (yet), the Soviets didn't realize the importance of August 19 and they decided to stage a coup. Of course, news of this international magnitude takes precedence over soaps, even an episode fans have been waiting years to see. Then came Hurricane Bob, demanding constant attention. Once DAYS finally made it back on the air, the reunion was over and Roman and Marlena just sat around her seedy hotel room trying to figure out where she'd been all these years.

But for those who did catch the reunion, it was quite a moving event. When Roman saw Marlena, he gasped, "It is you," and embraced her tightly. Even the non-DAYS fans in our office had tears in their eyes. And the repercussions of Marlena's return are endless. Roman has to deal with the love he feels for both his wife and Isabella. The twins have to give up the woman they've grown to love as their new mom and get to know the mom they never knew. And the Bradys have to accept yet another relative returning from the dead. As if all this wasn't enough, now we've found out that Roman isn't really Roman! (The Wayne Northrop Roman is the real one; Hogestyn's Roman is a fake.)

Thumbs Up!

When Marlena first landed in that pit on DAYS, we didn't care if she ever climbed out. The character had been so annoyingly self-righteous, she'd lost our sympathy. And her marriage to Roman was a joke - jumping from John's bed into Roman's without a backward glance was practically indecent, not to mention cold-blooded.

But the longer Marlena languished in that pit, the more our interest revived. Flashbacks of tender scenes with Marlena and Roman reminded us why we'd fallen in love with them all those years ago. And Marlena's heartfelt talks with John, during which we (finally) discovered that this couple's love hadn't just evaporated after their passionate, turbulent years together, restored our respect and affection for them. John's poignant expression as he watched Marlena and Roman together after the rescue foreshadowed a tantalizing story.

Thanks to scenes during Marlena's imprisonment, we see how and why she cares so deeply for both Roman and John. By resurrecting the past, DAYS has set the stage for an exciting future.

We Really Like Them!

Besides being at the top of every woman in Salem's most-wanted list, Drake Hogestyn is right up there at the top of the list of the most-liked people in daytime. His reputation for kindness and generosity is widely-known, causing actors from rival soaps to whimper, "Why can't he be on our show?" What stands out about Hogestyn is that he treats everyone with the same amount of respect, whether it be a co-star, a camera operator or a member of the press. "When I first came on the show, my very first day, I had never seen a soap opera in my life. I didn't know Drake from Adam," admits Jason Brooks (Peter). "Within the first ten minutes I was there, Drake came up to me wearing cut-off sweat pants and a baseball cap turned around backwards, with a big smile and says, 'Hey, I'm Drake Hogestyn, nice to meet you.' I said to myself, 'Well, they really have friendly crew guys on this show.' He's just a guy. There's no put-on with him."

What Hogestyn is known far and wide for are his humorous stories. Regardless of the topic or situation, the actor can be counted on to tell an animated anecdote. "Drake is the best storyteller you've ever met," touts staffer Nancy Lewis, who admits his stories can be long and drawn-out. "But that's what's so funny. You can be racing to go do something, but Drake stops you to tell an animated story. And suddenly it's like nothing else matters because he can make you laugh."

"I happen to be Drake's biggest fan," adds Brooks. "Drake is everything you strive to be as a man and as an actor. He's professional down to the bone; always positive. You never hear any negative things from him. He's probably one of the hottest guys in daytime, yet you never ever hear any attitude from him."

Hogestyn has managed to achieve the pinnacle of daytime success - and soap hunk status - while being a father of four and happily married. "I think that's what makes him so sexy," admits Lewis. "I think that's very attractive in a man: that he's a faithful husband and a good dad." And his love for children extends beyond his own; any child on the set gets the Hogestyn royal treatment. "When kids are visiting the set, like Make-A-Wish children," reveals Lewis, "he'll go above and beyond the call of duty. Anytime there's a kid around, he's showing them how to hold a bat - whether it's part of the scene or not."

Soap Opera Magazine's
Star Of The Week

DAYS' Drake Hogestyn, as John Black, personifies the perfect soap opera hero. Women swoon over him, commit adultery for him, bear his children. He's saved more than one, more than once, from certain death.

Men challenge him. He stands his ground, fights back, survives even the most desperate situations: brainwashing, drugging and dungeon captivity.

Drake's riveting portrayal of the handsome priest, torn between his love for Kristen, and his vows to God, have earned Drake our designation as Soap Opera Magazine's Star Of The Week.

Since John learned he was, and still is, a priest, Kristen is determined to play by the rules. She's married and will remain faithful. He's taken a vow to remain celibate, and to do God's work.

It would be impossible for most other actors to keep John from being seen as a victim of fate. Who can argue with God and fully expect to win?

Drake's John Black, of course. In recent weeks, John's impassioned pleas to Kristen to give up her marriage to Tony and return to him have subsided. Drake has managed to maintain John's dignity, strength and romantic charm, which was no easy task.

John's recent toned-down scenes no longer rely upon his eloquent entreaties, replete with grand, sweeping gestures. Now Drake is playing it subtle, with long lingering looks, fleeting stolen touches and quiet determination as he finds a way out of the priesthood.

John's strength of character draws from Drake's presence. Drake proves over and over again that he has the talent and charisma to preserve John's status as a romantic hero, no matter how often Kristen turns, albeit unwillingly, away from him. John even stands up to God to keep the woman he loves and Drake makes it seem plausible that he can do it.

Drake's storylines are often demanding mentally, physically, psychologically, emotionally and spiritually. John, and Drake with him, has run a full gamut this year and has emerged victorious. "Yes, and it's ending in high fashion. This is really new turf," Drake says of his latest storyline.

He uses a familiar baseball analogy to convey his trepidations. "I can't walk out of the batter's box knowing if I've got a base hit or I've struck out. I'm flying by the seat of my pants, but I think John's confusion is starting to dissipate. He's looking at that part of his spiritual nature that's not confined to the priesthood. There's something out there for all of us."

Drake admits that the spirituality of the storyline is "thought-provoking" for him. "I find myself opening up to considering there's more than this-earth reality. That works for me in the way I approach the scenes, too."

Drake's exploration of new possibilities and John's reluctant acceptance of his former life as a priest complement each other beautifully in the story.

"It's a slow awakening," says Drake. "This story is providing me with a big challenge. The spiritual area, the celibate life, is new to John."

John has not given up on Kristen, but his emotions are simmering. He needs to be released from his vows and he's in the process of doing that. "Meanwhile, things are happening on a higher level that are confusing to him," says Drake. John is suddenly center stage in a strange new triangle.

Good guys and bad have rarely been taken to such unearthly extremes on soaps and Drake frankly admits, "I'm more comfortable playing a romantic leading man with a woman" than the pivotal character between the devil and mere mortals.

Luckily, there's a hint that John has a special helpmate. During the Christmas tree lighting, the mysterious Desecrator beleaguering Salem shuts down the electrical power. A homeless man named Gabe tells John how to restore the power. Only later, after Shawn-Douglas refers to Gabe as an angel, does John consider there may be more going on than he first realized.

Later, John finds that someone has stolen his church keys and he rightly anticipates trouble. At the church he gets into a tussle with the Desecrator who was about to smash the créche. Before he can uncover the cloaked person, the Desecrator gets away. John doesn't yet realize that someone close to him is diabolically possessed.

His encounter in the church makes him realize he's dealing with a strange and very powerful force. There will also be more with Father Francis that reveals the source of evil in Salem.

Prior to this recent turn of events, Drake thought he had survived his ultimate challenge while he was held captive in Maison Blanche. "That was physically and mentally demanding. It was the first storyline since the start of my character on this show that I brought home with me. I stayed in that frame of mind a lot."

John Black is a perfect romantic hero. Drake Hogestyn has consistently proven himself a powerful actor, giving John strength, tenacity and deeper levels of resources at every challenge. Bravo!

Best And Worst Of DAYS

DAYS has had more shining moments than we have room to mention - and a few that have left the show's devoted fans crying "Foul!" See if you agree with our picks for what and who's made Salem sizzle - and fizzle!

Best Supercouples: John And Marlena

Come hell (and it did, with Satan in Salem) or high water (several times), and everything in between, this couple has a love that just keeps going and going and going!

Best Love Stories: John And Isabella

Another love story that ended tragically with Isabella's untimely death. It later offered the hope of love eternal when Isabella returned, in angelic form, to John when he needed a soul mate most.

Best Heroes: John Black

John has rescued more damsels in distress than Superman.

Best Weddings: John And Isabella (1992)

After all they went through to get to the altar, who could blame their baby, Brady, for wanting to be there, too?! It was a beautiful ceremony and a terrific family affair!

Best Recasts: Drake Hogestyn as Roman Brady (1986)

Granted, some people still chuckle over how plastic surgery and brainwashing resulted in permanently changed hair color, added inches of height and an altered body type and personality when Drake Hogestyn, succeeded Wayne Northrop as Roman Brady. But the recast worked - for Marlena and DAYS fans - and the difference in actors brought a new dynamic while preserving the heartwarming memories of a beloved character. It also established a viable new character (John Black) with new problems, a new story and new conflicts when the old Roman returned.

Best Triangles: John/Marlena/Stefano

Proves love doesn't just grow old and die.

Soap Opera Digest's
Performer Of The Week

Drake Hogestyn has worn many hats during his decade on DAYS: brave amnesiac, crusading cop, brainwashed prisoner, grieving widower, confused Alamain heir, wayward priest. But this year, the actor met his greatest challenge. Just five months after John survived the gas chamber in Aremid, he again faced death when The People Of The Night ordered him to die on the guillotine in Paris.

On paper, it sounds outrageous. But in reality, it was classic, successful soap plotting, because it kept the audience coming back to find out what would happen. And Hogestyn played this story, as he always does, with such conviction that we were swept right along.

DAYS' secret is that when they take us for a wild ride, there's a destination (no gimmicks here), and John's brush with death brought the John/Marlena relationship to a new level. After receiving his sentence, John got on his knees, alone. Positive he couldn't cheat death twice, it was time to reconcile with God. In a quiet prayer, he unselfishly thought of his kids, Brady and Belle, and the love of his life, Marlena. Playing it simply, Hogestyn conveyed John's heroism and his purity.

The other knockout moment came when the blade was about to fall. John looked up and stared at Marlena, as if trying to memorize every feature of her face. She cried, "I will see you in heaven." Of course, they escaped (body parts intact), but we saw the bond - and incredible chemistry between Hogestyn and Deidre Hall - in those seconds. Come to think of it, Hogestyn is the only leading man we can think of who has chemistry with just about everyone; he's there every moment. Which may be why no matter where the story takes him, viewers are there, too.

Soaps Sexy Men

Drake Hogestyn (John, DAYS)

Tall, dark, handsome, sexy, funny...there are so many adjectives that describe Drake that we could go on all day. On DAYS, he's been known as Roman Brady, Father John and John Black, but Drake's favorite roles to date are that of doting husband and father. He and his wife, Victoria, are proud parents of four children.

Who's Hot: Soaps' Sexy Men

Sexy Stars (Drake Hogestyn)

Soap Opera Digest: What's your idea of a romantic day?

Drake Hogestyn: This is like the dating game! I have to come up with something really clever. I can think of a thousand different romantic days. Romance comes in a lot of different shades, but it comes in one primary color, and that's (my wife) Victoria. We have so many different romantic moments that don't have to be days, actually. Since we have so many children and they're always around us, we try to steal little moments for ourselves. But you have to have a lot of them all the time, and it shouldn't be anything you plan. I can be in the car alone with her and hold her hand and ask her about her day, and that's romantic.

Soap Opera Digest: Are you a romantic person?

Drake Hogestyn: Very. I have always been. When I was younger, I always had girlfriends. I never disliked (girls). Never. From nursery on, I always wanted to be on the teeter-totter with a girl.

Soap Opera Digest: Do you think you're sexy?

Drake Hogestyn: I'm not good at answering this question. I feel comfortable with who I am. I feel physically comfortable with myself and that's probably because of my sports background, where your physical talents are on display for everyone to see. I think confidence in that field is attractive, and people want to gravitate toward that kind of confidence. My children respond to that feature, and I would never want to fall from grace in their eyes. My wife finds that sexy.

Soap Opera Digest: What makes you blush?

Drake Hogestyn: Talking about this.

The Men Of Salem

John Black (Drake Hogestyn)

What's Ahead:

While coming closer to the shocking secrets of his past, John just might drive his deepest love, Marlena, farther away. What he uncovers might devastate him, too.

Why We Love Him:

"He's such a wonderful father," says Patrika Darbo (Nancy), who noted how attentive he was to his daughters when they were extras on the show.

"It's easy to imagine him rolling on the lawn in the leaves with his kids," says Suzanne Rogers (Maggie). "He's wonderful to his kids and totally devoted to his wife, Victoria."

Renee Jones (Lexie) loves Hogestyn's outgoing personality. "It's rare to see him quiet," she points out. "He's so full of stories. But not long ago, I spotted him sitting on the floor, just looking down, and I thought something was wrong. He had earplugs in, listening to a ball game. That's the only time I've seen him so quiet."

Memorable Moments
Star Shine

Drake Hogestyn (John, DAYS) - The Actor Takes On The Challenge Of His Career

Actor Drake Hogestyn rises to the needs of the occasion as his character hits the depths of nastiness and rude behavior. Never before has hero John Black been so ruled by his human flaws as he is now.

Sure, Stefano meddled with his mind, but it's not a brain chip making him behave so badly - just human nature. Like Marlena jostled from her pedestal, he's lost his balance and fallen from his high horse. His son Brady is a troubled and menacing teen. He fathered a child by a family friend Hope and his marriage to Marlena is in danger. He's a mercenary one day, and a priest or doctor or pilot the next. John doesn't know who he really is, but like the rest of us, he suffers the consequences of his actions - even those that he had been programmed to perform. This Days of our Lives super-hero is on over-load, feeling frustrated and impotent. In other words, he's mad as hell and he's not going to take it anymore!

This new John is an amazing character to play. It's a sheer acting challenge at every turn! And luckily, Hogestyn is well up to the challenge.

John's lashing out at everyone. When he stops by Tuscany to have several drinks at the bar, the owner, his friend Maggie, cordially tries to make conversation with him. It's clear that he's had quite a few drinks and is uncharacteristically rude until she finally moves away.

Then, he waves her back, and always kind-hearted Maggie thinks that John, as he normally would have, is going to apologize. Wrong! That's not the case at all. John wants to know why Maggie had been so upset with under-legal-drinking-age Brady when he was boozing at the bar several weeks back. Again, John is rude to Maggie when she gives him a run-down of Brady's behavior. He proceeds to drink and become more surly as Maggie voices her concern for her customer and friend. Even she finally gives up and walks away, stunned and disappointed.

A powerful scene that shows John's lessening ability to cope, even the actor gave out a "Wow! That was something!" at the end of his scene. He was amazed as the audience was at home, watching this incredible transformation. John's actions and reactions even surprise Hogestyn these days.

But through the jolts and nasty places, there's still a loving soul and a heart that Stefano could not alter. Those human parts of John, nurtured and expressed by Hogestyn through the worst times for John, make him shine. Bravo, Mr. Hogestyn!

A Rave From A Co-Star...

Castmate Suzanne Rogers (Maggie) was stunned to see Drake Hogestyn express John's darker side to her mild-mannered Maggie in a scene that showed not only her compassion, but her strength, business sense and responsibility. "Drake is having fun doing confrontational scenes. He's always great to work with, and watching him explore different, wild emotions is exciting. He really gets into it."

Worth The Wait

Father, husband, businessman, mercenary...Days of our Lives' John Black sports many hats, and apparently, so does his portrayer, Drake Hogestyn. The star was spotted by fans at Food Buoy, a small eatery in Falmouth, MA, during Memorial Day weekend. When the understaffed wait staff was unable to get to all the customers, Hogestyn happily lent a hand, pouring coffee for patrons. If Basic Black fails, perhaps there's a job waiting for John at the Brady Pub?

Soaps' Sexiest Men:
Their Surprising Answers
To Candid Questions

Hot Enough For You? Soap Opera Digest Salutes The Sexiest Guys On Daytime

Temperatures are rising, and it has nothing to do with the weather. Soap Opera Digest's diligent editors put their noses to the grindstone to evaluate the heavenly hunks on daytime and narrowed it down to the 10 sexiest. Yes, it's a tough job, but somebody's got to do it. This year's picks are talented, sexy, gorgeous, sexy, smart, sexy, funny, sexy, humble and oh, yeah, did we mention sexy?

Soap Opera Digest: How does it feel to be named DAYS' sexiest man?

Drake Hogestyn: All those presents I sent to the editors finally worked, huh (laughs)?

Soap Opera Digest: How do you stay in shape?

Drake Hogestyn: I'm doing a lot of cardio now. I've been over at the beach lately, getting on the surfboard. I miss my weights; I can't wait to get back to them.

Soap Opera Digest: How do you feel about shirtless scenes?

Drake Hogestyn: I don't have any problem with that if it's all part of what's going on in John's everyday life. One day, Belle was banging on the door to the penthouse, and John's line was, 'Hold on, hold on, I'm coming.' It was like he just got out of the shower, so it was my idea to have him come out with a towel wrapped around him. That kind of stuff works. I heard something a long time ago, before I was in the acting profession, that athletes, because they are so in tune with their physical presence, are very comfortable in front of people. I'm not ashamed of my physical appearance.

Soap Opera Digest: What movie do you find sexy?

Drake Hogestyn: I thought Heaven Can Wait was sexy. Is that weird? I saw it when things weren't happening with (future wife) Victoria, and I kept thinking something would happen and we would get back together, so I found that romantic. I also found Ghost sexy.

Soap Opera Digest: What's the sexiest personality trait that a woman can have?

Drake Hogestyn: Self-esteem.

Soap Opera Digest: What is the key to keeping a marriage alive?

Drake Hogestyn: You have to make time for yourselves. It's so important. Those spontaneous, magic moments of being alone are money in the bank. It keeps the relationship strong and powerful.

Soap Opera Digest: What foods do you find sexy?

Drake Hogestyn: A glass of wine, the way Victoria drinks it, is very sexy. It has to be wine; it can't be a martini. It's the way she holds it, the curve of her wrist. It's the whole package.

At SoapOperaDigest.com you spoke out about who you think is daytime's sexiest man. Here are your top five:

1. Drake Hogestyn (John, Days of our Lives)
2. Paul Anthony, Stewart (Danny, Guiding Light)
3. Greg Vaughan (Lucky, General Hospital)
4. Galen Gering (Luis, Passions)
5. Maximillian Alexander (Carlos, All My Children)

Stars We Love

They are well-mannered, gracious, thoughtful and good sports. They always make time for the fans, go above and beyond to deliver a good quote or pose for photos and know how to brighten up our days with thank-you notes and flowers. Here's our salute to the actors who always make us smile.

Accommodation Station: Sure, he may be one of DAYS's most popular stars, but Drake Hogestyn (John) is one of the most easygoing, least demanding actors on soaps. He never has demands for photo shoots and traveled almost an hour out of his way to attend Soap Opera Digest's Preview 2003 shoot. The actor, who lives in Malibu, didn't mind staying late and getting caught in rush-hour traffic - to him, it's all part of being a team player.

Soap Opera Digest's
Performer Of The Week

Drake Hogestyn (John, DAYS)

For the past 18 years, DAYS has played to Drake Hogestyn's strength as a heroic leading man, tossing him physical power plays in which John saves the day. During the startling week of Alice's death, Hogestyn proved that he's more than capable of going beyond "the spy who loved me" fare.

We could almost see the blood drain from John's face when he realized that Marlena had gone to kill Alice, the sweetest lady in Salem, and he could have stopped her. There was a palpable numbness and a sick-to-his-stomach ache. Even then, Hogestyn allowed a desperate glimmer of hope to shine through in his eyes: Maybe it wouldn't come to pass.

Throughout the week, Hogestyn had a variety of scene partners. Although he approached each encounter differently, the unifying theme was his delivery - muted tones, as though John was struggling to find his voice and accept the painful truth: His beloved Marlena was the serial killer. With Alison Sweeney's hysterical Sami, he was a calm father trying to restore order, even as she hurled angry accusations at him. In scenes with Kirsten Storms' Belle and Kyle Lowder's Brady, he took a softer, more compassionate tack because he had the unenviable task of telling them about Marlena. With Kristian Alfonso (Hope) and Peter Reckell (Bo), he was defensive, searching for an out for his wife.

But it was Hogestyn's confrontation with Deidre Hall (Marlena) - six months in the making - that was truly electric. John entered the penthouse, soaked from running there in the rain. His body language - uncharacteristically relaxed shoulders, tentative steps - registered acceptance that she had lied to him. John's face showed the rest: Sadness, when he told her that he knew she was guilty. Compassion, when she confessed. Shock, when she stole his gun and forced him out on the terrace. There, he delivered one last, emotional plea. "I still love you, Doc," John declared, holding back the tears, voice breaking. "You don't want to kill me, but you think it's too late...it's never too late for love like ours...it's eternal."

Hogestyn is rarely given the chance to show John's vulnerability. After those affecting episodes, we're left wondering why.
