[edit] Career
[edit] Early Career
When Harris was 9, the family uprooted from Cleavland to New York City in the Staten Island when his father received a promotion and a transfer. During this time, he, as many children new to the Big Apple did, developed an interest in movies and televisions shows. His mother took him to several auditions and he did land a few high profile commercial spots for several toy companies.
Harris' big break came when he was playing basketball at the Manhattan Boys and Girl's Club. A casting director took notice of him and flew him out to Los Angeles to meet James Cameron and personally audition for the highly-anticipated big budget sequel to The Terminator, Terminator 2: Judgement Day. Cameron casted Harris on the spot. The role would earn him an MTV Movie Award for Best Breakthrough Role and a Saturn Award for Best Young Actor Performance.
Cameron would cast Harris again as rookie Secret Agent Faisil in the 1994 action hit, True Lies. Harris still credits Cameron for getting his foot in the door during Cameron's "low budget, art-house days."
After these successes, Harris stayed out of the Hollywood's radar for roughly five years. He finished school and went on to Comlumbia University to study History. Harris would resurge in 1999 with a surprising and heartfelt turn in Magnolia. His portray of Frank T.J. Mackey, based of off Ross Jeffries earned Harris rave reviews and made people think twice about his former child-star status.
The start of the new millenium was a watershed time for Harris. Not only did he deliver an impressive turn as the doomed Boromir in The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring,, but also earned cult status in the short lived but much beloved series Firefly as crass, foul-mouthed tough guy Jayne Cobb. The show was sadly cancelled after only eleven of the fourteen produced episodes were aired.
[edit] Recent and Future Roles
An explosive return to film after the failure of Firefly in series' film adaptation Serenity put Harris help put Harris further on the action map and made him a force to be reckoned with. This was follwed up by another star turn in the epic adaptation of 300 in 2007. The film had the highest debut of an R-Rated feature and broke several box office records.
Harris would once again surprise everyone in the industry and audiences alike when it was announced that he was cast as protagonist Jeff Kohlver in the film adaptation of Hard Candy. Another chilling, powerful performance was given by Harris who continued to impress all with his chops as a dramatic actor instead of just an action icon. In 2009 he has no fewer than three films set to debut. Dennis Lehane's movie treatment of Shutter Island, Defiance, a true life story of Polish Jews forming an armed resistance during World War II and a highly rumored cameo in Terminator: Salvation.
